Trains between Cardiff and Rhymney will be disrupted until the end of 2023, Transport for Wales has confirmed. The service will be affected on five evenings every week for the rest of the year as work continues on the construction of the new South Wales Metro.
The track will be closed from approximately 8pm every Sunday, Monday, Tuesdays Wednesday and Thursday while the work takes place. Several services will instead be run using rail replacement buses on each of these days until the end of the year.
The Metro project, which is now set to be finished in 2024, involves involves the electrification of the core Valley lines (from Treherbert, Aberdare, Merthyr and Rhymney into Cardiff), as well as the Coryton and city lines through the capital down to Cardiff Bay. Transport for Wales confirmed that the bus replacement services were already in force and are due to continue until the end of the year. They added that the work taking place on the line would include the installation of Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) foundations and masts and electrical wires, as well as signalling and telecoms fibre installations.
Stations and bridges will also be modified, while new track protection will be put in place. The work will take place at night, with the track closed to ensure the safety of workers.
Passengers are able to use their train tickets on replacement bus service, with bus stops located in the car park of Rhymney train station and the rear car park of Cardiff Central train station.
The confirmation comes after it was announced that the train line between Radyr and Pontypridd would remain closed for nearly three weeks this month due to more engineering work on the South Wales Metro. The line will reopen on Friday, January 27, having been closed to trains every day during that period, with the exception of January 12 and 13.
The closures also saw services suspended between Radyr and Cardiff Central station between Sunday, January 8 and Wednesday, January 11. Services north of Pontypridd will also be affected, with no trains running from the station to Treherbert, Aberdare or Merthyr Tydfil between Saturday, January 14 and Sunday, January 22.
