Cardiff 'Sainsbury's cat' who has 4,000 online fans goes missing

A cat who is a regular fixture at a Cardiff supermarket and has a fan page with more than 4,000 followers is missing. Clover, the 'Sainsbury's cat', has been regularly frequenting the supermarket in Thornhill for a number of years.

However a recent post on her Facebook fan page says that she has not been seen for a number of days. The post read: "Very sad news, Clover the beloved Sainsbury's cat is missing. She hasn't been seen for a few days. She is chipped and wearing a collar. If you see her please message."

In 2016 a rumour that Clover had been banned from the supermarket led to a petition that attracted nearly 500 signatures. However the company said they were happy for the cat to remain in the store as long as she kept away from the counters.

Clover's owner, who has owned her since she was a kitten, said the pet no longer lives at home but she believes the cat has been missing for five days. "Obviously she's missed," the owner, who asked not to be named, said.

"We're happy because she's happy down at Sainsbury's with her fan club. She's brought a lot of comfort during the pandemic and stuff. It's really unusual and it is really concerning.

"She has been taken by people before and they think she's a stray. She's been taken three times before and we've managed to get her back because people have taken her to the vets and we've had a phone call. I'm just hoping it's something as simple as that. You could probably write a book about Clover and all her escapades. It's quite a story."

Clover's Facebook page regularly features pictures of her in a variety of places around the supermarket, attracting hundreds of likes. Shoppers have left comments below the post expressing their concern that Clover has not been seen.

"Just been to Sainsburys and wondered where she was.! Hope she is found safe and sound," one shopper wrote. Another said: "Oh no, I hope Clover is found soon she is such a lovely cat and brings pleasure to many people shopping in Sainsbury’s."
