Cardiff Rugby is investigating an incident of alleged "appalling" behaviour by some players at a city pub on Saturday night.
The Welsh capital side were in action on Friday night, when they were thumped 31-18 by South African side Lions at Cardiff Arms Park. Twenty-four hours later, some players headed out on a team social in the city on Saturday night, and it is the behaviour of some at The Grange on Penarth Road, Grangetown, which has sparked an internal probe amid claims of "shameful" conduct.
Cardiff Rugby is due to meet with the pub's management on Monday morning, and say appropriate action will be taken should the allegations be confirmed.
An account of the alleged incident was shared online on Reddit by an apparent staff member from the pub and while it has since been deleted, a screenshot of the claims have been circulated elsewhere on social media. In a screenshot of the post shared to Twitter, entitled "Cardiff Blues (sic) team causing chaos in Grangetown pub", the author claimed: "I work at a pretty popular pub in Grangetown. Last night the Cardiff Blues (sic) team came in and a few of them engaged in some appalling behaviour.
"Two of the forwards were extremely aggressive and were threatening the barstaff (sic) with violence as they had been asked to leave... This team is meant to represent my city and its (sic) quite shameful to see them behave this way. I cannot imagine what they're like in other cities, nevermind their hometown."
The account had alleged that after leaving the premises individuals went out and bought eggs before returning and throwing them at tables and the floor, but it's understood players were already in possession of eggs as part of the social.
A statement from the club issued on Sunday said: "Cardiff Rugby are aware of an alleged incident that took place in a city centre pub on Saturday evening (October 1). The club have made contact with the pub in question and a meeting will be held tomorrow (Monday, October 3) with Cardiff Rugby representatives and the pub’s management in attendance to ascertain the full facts. Cardiff Rugby does not condone the alleged behaviour and the appropriate action will be taken should the allegations be confirmed. No further comments will be made at this time."
A spokesperson for The Grange said they had been in contact with the club ahead of a meeting on Monday morning but declined to comment further at this time.
It's not the first time the off-field behaviour of a Cardiff Blues/Rugby player has hit the headlines. Last autumn it emerged that Wales international Cory Hill had been involved in an incident along with two other men in May 2021 which saw a woman's home damaged. Hill, who now plays club rugby in Japan, apologised and said he was "genuinely sincerely sorry for being involved in the incident and any distress caused".
