Cardiff City transfer news as Nottingham Forest defender linked and update given on Joe Ralls contract offer

Here are you Cardiff City headlines for Monday, May 16.

Cardiff named among clubs after Nottingham Forest man

NottinghamshireLive report that Forest defender Baba Fernandes is a transfer target for Cardiff City and Coventry City.

The 22-year-old centre-back will leave the City Ground this summer, having failed to break into Steve Cooper's first-team squad after early-season outings in the Carabao Cup.

He has come to the end of his contract in the east Midlands and it means he will be a free transfer for any would-be suitor this summer, with Cardiff being named in the report as a possible next destination for the youngster.

However, that rumour has been swiftly batted back by sources at the club. Fernandes is a player they are aware of, but there is no interest in signing him at this point.

Elsewhere, Cardiff have had to end their interest in West Ham defender Aji Alese. The Bluebirds had been keen on the 21-year-old, but it is understood he would only have been available for sale. Cardiff did not want to shell out a transfer fee and instead wanted him on loan, which, it is understood, they were told is not a possibility.

Cardiff will, of course, need to bolster their centre-back options this summer, with Aden Flint, Ciaron Brown and Sean Morrison all out of contract, however we are told the latter has been offered some sort of package to tie him over while he recovers from his ACL injury.

Ralls contract update

Cardiff City midfielder Joe Ralls has still not told the club his decision over signing a new contract as the EFL's deadline of May 21 rapidly approaches.

WalesOnline understands an extension was offered to the 28-year-old months ago but the club are still yet to hear anything concrete regarding Ralls' stance. If Cardiff do not hear anything by this Saturday he will have to be listed as a released player.

As ever with these sorts of things, it is never put in the public domain just how much these players are earning, however rumours that Ralls has been offered half of his current salary have been vehemently denied by sources at Cardiff.

If Ralls was to sign the deal which has been put to him, it is understood he would still be the highest-paid player at the club next season. Ralls has more than 300 Cardiff City appearances to his name, having this year celebrated 12 years at the club.

Wales Women to play at CCS

Wales will play their final Women's World Cup qualifier at Cardiff City Stadium, it has been announced.

Gemma Grainger's Wales are bidding to claim a second-placed finish in Group I to set up a play-off for a place at the 2023 World Cup, which is being hosted in Australia and New Zealand. It would be Wales Women's first major finals tournament.

They need four points from their final two qualifiers to guarantee second place as they travel to Greece on Friday, September 2, before hosting Slovenia on Tuesday, September 6, in the Welsh capital (7.15pm kick-off)

Wales broke their attendance record the last time they played at the ground, with a crowd of 5,455 watching on as Wales won 4-0 against Estonia in October.

It is hoped September's World Cup qualifier will set a new attendance record for a home women's football international.
