Cardiff City transfer news as 'advanced talks' with Euro side emerge and Man City summer target set to be on market

These are your Cardiff City headlines on Wednesday, January 11.

Euro side in 'advanced talks' for Nkounkou

Reports in France state St Etienne are in advanced talks to sign Niels Nkounkou on loan.

The defender joined Cardiff on a temporary deal as cover due to injuries to Jamilu Collins and Joel Bagan sustained earlier on in the season.

Cardiff and his loan club Everton held discussions last week over his future in south Wales, and it was decided that, unless something drastic happens this month, it would be best for him to stay in the Welsh capital to continue his progress.

Well, the landscape appears to have shifted for the 22-year-old, who has seen Callum O'Dowda jump ahead of him in the pecking order at left-back.

Le Parisien journalist Benjamin Quarez wrote on Twitter: “Saint-Etienne in advanced discussions for the loan of left side Niels Nkounkou.

"The OM-trained defender has been on loan from Everton to Cardiff since the start of the season. He could join Forez in the coming days.”

Delap could be recalled

Manchester City could recall striker Liam Delap from his loan at Stoke City.

Delap was a summer target for former Cardiff Steve Morison, who admitted the youngster was a player he looked to sign before the window shut in September.

"Do you think I'm not trying?" Morison said when asked if they wanted to add to their forward options. "It's not that I'm not making those decisions. There is not anyone in our remit at the minute that's available.

"Sam Surridge is not available. Liam Delap is someone we looked at, he picked Stoke over us and West Brom. Ellis Simms was someone we looked at but he picked Sunderland over us. We have been close. We just haven't got one."

The Telegraph now report City could bring back Delap from his stint in the Potteries and re-loan him out, "with a number of other Championship clubs interested". This could well prompt the Bluebirds into a re-think, and with their transfer embargo now lifted, further firepower could be on the agenda before the window closes.

Moz: Easy decision to join Millers

Sean Morrison says joining Rotherham United was an easy decision and says he is raring to go.

Yesterday, Morrison put pen to paper on a deal until the end of the season with the Millers after leaving Cardiff last week. Manager Mark Hudson paid tribute to the defender, who has just returned from a serious knee injury which sidelined him for almost nine months.

He will wear the number 23 shirt in south Yorkshire, and could make his debut for his new club as soon as this weekend, with Blackburn Rovers the visitors to the New York Stadium.

"I had a really good conversation with the gaffer and got his vibe and what he wanted from me it was an easy decision to come here," he said. "I know a lot of players who have played under him (Matt Taylor) and they’ve said wonderful things which made my decision much easier.

"I’m coming back after a long-term injury but have been back in training for a few months and have been raring to go for a while now. This is an opportunity for me to try and play games and show people that I can still do it. I’ll go out there and give everything. I want to play for the badge, get out there and do my best for RUFC.

"I’m a defender at heart, like to do the horrible stuff, win headers, win tackles, blocks, organise with the main priority being to keep clean sheets. I’ve been lucky to score a few goals in my career as well. Whenever I’ve played against Rotherham teams they have always been good at set-pieces so hopefully I can get on the end of a few.

"It is a long way from home but I spent some time in Yorkshire some years ago and loved it. Hopefully I can get the family up as soon as possible."

Leeds clash on the box

Cardiff's FA Cup replay with Leeds United next week has been selected for TV broadcast.

The game at Elland Road on Wednesday, January 18, will be shown on ITV and ITVX, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm.

The winner will then face either Accrington Stanley or Boreham Wood away from home in the fourth round of the competition, with the game set to take place over the weekend of January 27-30.
