Cardiff City transfer headlines as Bristol City boss slams player on eve of derby and Sheffield Wednesday's Flint interest revealed

Here's your round-up of all the latest Cardiff City headlines for Thursday, January 20.

Pearson blasts Bakinson ahead of Severnside derby

Nigel Pearson has hit out at Bristol City player Tyreeq Bakinson ahead of the Robins' clash with Cardiff City.

Our colleagues at BristolLive report that Bakinson has interest from Ipswich Town and could move there on loan in the coming days.

And, ahead of the Severnside derby, Pearson's pre-game press conference was dominated by the manager's thoughts on the 23-year-old, and there were some pretty stern words.

When asked whether reports surrounding Bakinson's exit were accurate, Pearson said: "Yes. As far as I'm concerned, and I've said it before, if players don't want to be here they can go.

"I'm not bothered. He's a player who unfortunately just wants to play on his own terms. It's not something I particularly want so he can go.

"I'm not wasting energy on negativity, I don't invest time on that, I'm not just saying it. If you ask people who work with me they'll say exactly the same thing, I don't waste energy on negativity, it drives me mad.

"If people aren't in the side, I want them to work hard to get there and I want people who are in the side to work hard to stay there. I don't want people that when the going gets tough, they want to go somewhere else, I'm not interested.

"The fact that I am prepared to say, 'yeah, let the deal go ahead' because actually, people around the place who sap the energy out of other people is not as valuable as having people here who want to be playing."

On the Cardiff clash, Pearson says he's well aware of the emotions that will be riding on Saturday's Severnside derby, but urged his side to play the game, and not the occasion at Ashton Gate.

"I wouldn't dismiss it as just being another three points at stake," he told reporters at his pre-match press conference. "It is three points at stake, but we have to recognise how important it is when you play derbies. But the bottom line is that you've still got to be able to perform.

"To be able to perform, you've got to have control over the emotional side of the game. Whether that's a big game in any context. Last game of the season to win something or avoid relegation. Whether it's a cup final or a derby. Whatever it it, if two teams are evenly matched in terms of their ability, it's normally the team that can handle the occasion best that comes out on top.

"Those things remain the same. It's not dismissing the importance of what it means to the fans. We've sold 20,000 tickets already so that in itself suggests it's a big game for both sets of supporters.

"It'll be a great atmosphere."

The Robins are looking for a first league double over the Bluebirds since 2003, but Pearson admits he's weary of the physical threat posed by Steve Morison's side.

"They're dangerous from set plays," he added.

"They have some physical players and they have started to play out a bit more. Whether that turns out to be the case on the day, we'll have to wait and see. the most important thing for us at the moment is to try and get the level of our own performance more consistently at a higher level.

"Results are the most important thing of course, but we're going to have to manage the occasion and that's what I expect us to do."

Fans receive banning orders

Two Cardiff City fans have been banned from attending football matches the next three years.

The South Wales Argus reports that Keiron Walsh, 21, of Newport, and Daryl Curtis, 40, of Stewart Street in Treorchy, have been handed Football Banning Orders after going onto the pitch during the Carabao Cup clash between Cardiff City and Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at Cardiff City Stadium.

Walsh appeared before Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 and pleaded guilty to the charges, receiving a £160 fine with £85 costs

Curtis, who also pleaded guilty, appeared at the same court on December 20, 2021, and was fined £120 with £85 costs.

As part of the Football Banning Orders, both men will have to surrender their passports to police whenever Wales are playing football games abroad.

Owls chase Flint

Sheffield Wednesday reportedly enquired about taking Aden Flint on loan for the rest of the season, it has been reported.

Over the last few days, the centre back has been the subject of interest from Sunderland, if reports up in the north east are to be believed, with the player's contract at Cardiff up in the summer.

Now, The Star up in Sheffield claim the Owls made an approach to take the 32-year-old back on loan until the end of the season.

Flint enjoyed a successful, albeit brief, loan stint up at Hillsborough when he was out of favour at Cardiff at the back end of 2020, however a horrible hamstring injury, which required surgery, ended his time there.

He subsequently came back down to Cardiff and endeared himself to City fans with a string of impressive performances and by scoring the winning goal against Swansea City in the South Wales derby.

However, with his contract up at the end of the season, clubs appear to be taking an interest in the seasoned Championship defender.
