Cardiff City to add ex-Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Stoke City midfielder Dean Whitehead to backroom staff

Mark Hudson is set to add former midfielder Dean Whitehead to his backroom staff at Cardiff City.

The interim manager had hoped to bring in another coach following the departure of Steve Morison, which had left his staff a person light for the last month.

Hudson said earlier this week that he had hoped to wrap up the deal to get a coach in before the end of the week and, following the 2-1 defeat by Watford, revealed Whitehead had been in attendance at Cardiff City Stadium on Wednesday night.

Whitehead, a former midfielder with Stoke City, Middlesbrough, Sunderland and others, has moved into coaching since his retirement from playing the game, taking up roles at Huddersfield Town, Shrewsbury Town, Port Vale and, most recently, Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas.

"I think it's all completed, which is pleasing. I have been after him for a while, he's a good coach, Dean Whitehead, someone I've worked with before," Hudson said.

"He has just been at Besiktas, so it shows he is top quality. He is a very good coach and a very good human being. Like I said before, I didn't want to rush into a decision, I wanted to make sure it was right for everyone. Hopefully that gets done in the next day.

"He will be first-team coach. We are all working, we are all collaborative, we all work together. It's a good addition, another one who can help on the grass with the players. He'll have respect for them, they'll respect him and he has got a lot to add to our coaching unit."

For Hudson, who worked with Whitehead at Huddersfield, that appears to be a major boost pertaining to securing his own future at the club.

He remains the club's interim manager, but has now taken charge of eight fixtures. He hopes that more clarity will be given on his position as manager in the not-so-distant future.

"It's obviously nice to be able to bring that addition in," he added.

"The conversations are continuing, so we hope to have some clarity for everyone sooner rather than later."
