Cardiff City player ratings as returning O'Dowda impresses but defender struggles to keep up with pace in Hull defeat

Cardiff City's relegation worries worsened with a 1-0 defeat to Hull City on Saturday.

Here's how the Bluebirds players rated:

Ryan Allsop 6

Can't really be blamed for the goal and made several smart saves. A reasonable showing.

Perry Ng 6

Pretty assured performance on the right of the four. Produced a brilliant tackle to dispossess Aaron Connolly as he tried to break in the second half.

Cedric Kipre 6

Looked a little shaky initially but grew into the game and proved a strong presence in the back four. Made some crucial interventions.

Mark McGuinness 6

Another decent performance, in fairness. Solid in the heart of the defence. Won everything in the air all afternoon.

Jack Simpson 4

Was turned inside out by Cyrus Christie all day. Gave him far too much space out wide and his team were duly punished. Improved after that, but this was a very difficult day for the defender. Was forced off with a head injury, but there was probably a case for hooking him anyway. Just doesn't look comfortable in that left-back role.

Callum O'Dowda 6 - star man

If Cardiff were going to find a breakthrough, it surely would have come through him. Showed plenty of zip out wide and was one of the few able to open up the Hull defence. Only possible criticism is that he was arguably partially culpable for allowing Christie the space to score.

Ryan Wintle (c) 5

Did his best to make something happen, but couldn't find the final ball needed to bring those up top into the game. Sent a corner straight out of play late on, which summed up his, and Cardiff's, day.

Romaine Sawyers 5

Tidy enough in possession, but didn't really display any sort of attacking spark and was bypassed a little too easily at times. Faded as the game went on.

Sheyi Ojo 6

Industrious all afternoon. Looked after the ball reasonably well and made a couple of good runs. Unfortunately, wasn't enough in terms of end product.

Callum Robinson 4

Head clearly dropped after the penalty miss. A frustrating day at the office for the forward. Subbed.

Jaden Philogene 6

Just not quite on the same wavelength as his team-mates at times. Made some decent runs, and did well to win the penalty. But, overall, didn't quite offer enough in the final third.

Subs:

Sory Kaba (on for Robinson, '55) - Will feel he should have buried a chance late on. Showed some good touches too. Encouraging. 6

Kion Etete (on for Simpson, '68) - Added some much-needed height up top, but couldn't quite find an attacking spark. 5

Mark Harris (on for Ojo, '90) - N/A.
