Cardiff City headlines as Rob Page explains Isaak Davies omission from latest Wales squad

Here's your round-up of all the latest Cardiff City headlines for Wednesday, March 16.

Page explains Davies omission

Wales boss Rob Page says he's been impressed with the recent form of Isaak Davies, but has suggested the youngster isn't quite ready for the demands of international football.

Page has named three Cardiff stars in his 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup play-off semi-final with Austria, including Rubin Colwill, Mark Harris and Will Vaulks.

Given his impressive recent run of form for the Bluebirds, there had been a suggestion Davies was perhaps in line for a call-up too, but he has been overlooked on this occasion, despite catching the eye of the Wales boss.

"Isaak's got a lot of potential," Page said when questioned on the youngster.

"I can see why he's liked at Cardiff and I can see why he's playing.

"He's got an enthusiasm. He's got a work rate that I'm sure every supporter would appreciate.

"But this is another level and this is a big ask.

"This is his first proper season in the Championship where he's played minutes. So to put that on him again and go into this level with the game is probably unrealistic."

However, while the 20-year-old has missed out on this occasion, he is still a player firmly on the radar.

"He's definitely in our thoughts," Page continued. "I've been to watch him personally. He'll have a couple of great games now for the under-21s and he's definitely got a bright future in front of him."

Ng hails Cardiff's identity

Perry Ng says Cardiff's vociferous home support is capable of striking fear into any team, and says the club now have a more defined identity under boss Steve Morison.

The Bluebirds host Stoke City on Wednesday night, with the Potters arriving in the capital on the back of a seven-match winless run.

Cardiff, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last three outings following a drab 0-0 draw at home to Preston North End at the weekend.

Ng, who has enjoyed an upturn in form on a personal level after moving to a more central role, is eager to end the season on a positive note, and says the club's fans can play their part.

"With our crowd behind us, any team coming here should be afraid of us," he said. "We've got a real identity now with how we play, so I think that helps us. But Stoke are a good team, they play a similar formation to us, so it will be a tough game. They've got some good individuals, so we'll have to be on our game.

"We know how good they can be because we were 3-0 down against them earlier in the season, so we know what to expect. In the second half we were fantastic there, so we need to do the same again.

"We've come a long way since the start of the season, and if we can keep training and working on a few more little tweaks, I think we can become a really good team. If we can build a few wins and get a bit of momentum going into next year, it will brilliant."

O'Neill reflects on 'difficult' Cardiff day

Current Cardiff boss Morison opened his tenure with a thrilling 3-3 draw at Stoke earlier in the season, in a game that saw Cardiff record a sensational comeback from three goals down.

The result at the bet365 Stadium perhaps helped to set the tone for Morison's reign, but clearly left something of scar for the Potters, who have won just six of their last 21 league games since - a run that has surely ended their hopes of a top six finish.

Looking back on that result, Stoke boss Michael O'Neill said: "Cardiff was a difficult day for us as a team because we had come out of a week when we’d lost three games. We had returned from an international break and lost at Sheffield United narrowly, we lost very narrowly against Bournemouth – a goalkeeping mistake – and if memory serves me right we lost away at Millwall from being ahead.

"That was a challenging part, then we were 3-0 up at home and gave it away to draw. But I think if you look how we reacted after that, did we win the next four games?

"The fact that it’s Cardiff is irrelevant to me. We got into a situation when we conceded very quickly and having been in a very comfortable position, we should have probably even have been further ahead, we obviously threw away two points. It was a very frustrating day for the home support as well, which we fully understand.

"For me, this is an away game and we have to go and try to win the game, as we have done. We tried to win the game desperately on Saturday, we tried to win at Barnsley, now we go again at Cardiff."
