Cardiff City headlines as Mark Harris now 'a man possessed' and Lee Tomlin's future takes another turn

Here's your round-up of all the latest Cardiff City headlines for Wednesday, February 16.

Harris 'like a man possessed' on training ground

Steve Morison says goalscorer Mark Harris has been doing his utmost to impress on the training ground recently, amid increased competition for places in his starting XI.

Harris netted a decisive second goal, his fourth of the current campaign, having come off the bench for the second time in a week.

The Wales star hasn't started a league game since the 3-2 defeat to Bristol City, and Morison has been impressed by the way in which the forward had applied himself on the training ground recently.

"It was a great finish, he's cut in and taken it so quickly," Morison said when dissecting the Welshman's goal. "Funnily enough, if you'd watched training yesterday, he did that yesterday. He was like a man possessed.

"Literally everything he touched went into the back of the net.

"He had one opportunity tonight and scored.

"It wasn't a surprise when he did it, but it's nice to see."

Harris is just one of several forwards now in the building, and says the level of competition within the squad is helping to push everyone to be better on the training ground.

“There’s a lot of competition up top for a place in the side, so you can’t take your foot off the pedal," Harris said. "You’ve got to show what you can do every day in training, then taking the opportunity when you get it with both hands.

“It’s a group of good lads that we’ve got in the squad, including those who came in last month. We’re all pushing each other on in training and on the pitch, it’s healthy for us and good for the team.

“I played Saturday and wanted to keep going into as many games as possible. I got my head down and kept training as hard as I could, which hopefully I can keep taking into the games.”

Bagan eyes late season surge after match-winning display

Joel Bagan says Cardiff have given themselves a real chance to start pushing up the table following their recent rich run of form.

The young left-back was named man of the match by Sky Sports, after netting his second goal in as many games in the 2-0 win over Coventry City at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday.

A third consecutive win at home has moved the Bluebirds 15 points clear of the relegation zone and, having netted in the 2-1 defeat to Millwall at the weekend, Bagan has emerged as a real positive for boss Morison.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the 20-year-old said: “To score at home, get a clean sheet and a win against a good side, it meant a lot,” he began. “I hadn’t scored for a long time before these two, so I couldn’t believe it when it went in. It’s a great feeling.

“We’ve said that we’re looking up after the last few results we’ve had. We definitely think we can push up the table now and finish as high as we can.”

Team-mate Will Vaulks was on hand to present Bagan with his award at full time, and said Tuesday's victory showed exactly how far this team had come under Morison.

"I think it’s been slower progress than we’d have liked, but we’re getting there now," he said. "It’s been a shame to come this far in the season and just be kicking on now, but it’s better late than never.

“I think we showed how far we’ve come. When we played Coventry away, we got battered, it was only 1-0, but we were so far from them.

“Tonight, I thought we were the better team. That goal has been coming, he chopped inside twice against Millwall. He looks like he’s got his confidence back and I thought he was excellent."

Frustrated Robins bemoans lack of energy

Coventry City boss Mark Robins says his side were their own worst enemy during Tuesday night's defeat at Cardiff City Stadium, adding that he was particularly disappointed the Sky Blues' failure to match Cardiff's energy levels.

Speaking after the game, Robins said: "I think we nullified ourselves because we didn't have the energy. This game was about energy, make no mistake about it.

"It's not about how good they were and how bad we were and whatever. It's not about that, it's about energy.

"The energy levels weren't there so we couldn't get to the level we usually play at.

"So that is the disappointment, it's a frustration."

Tomlin's Wrexham move looking unlikely as he cheekily bids for manager's job

Former Cardiff hero Lee Tomlin looks unlikely to join National League side Wrexham.

Tomlin, who left City by mutual consent back in October, had been training with the Reds last week, with boss Phil Parkinson running the rule over whether a move for the 33-year-old could be struck.

However, it seems the two parties have struggled to come to an agreement.

"The Lee Tomlin deal hasn't progressed and is unlikely to," said manager Parkinson.

Tomlin hasn't played a competitive game for over a year, but does seem keen on a return to football.

He has even seemingly thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant managerial position at AFC Rushden and Diamonds, the latest incarnation of the club where Tomlin started his career.

Retweeting the news that the club had parted company with first-team coach Andy Peaks, Tomlin commented: "Want a player/manager?"

It seems a tongue-in-cheek proposal, but it does perhaps give some indication on Tomlin's next move may low.
