Cardiff City headlines as Leeds United legend warns them over Bluebirds rivalry and Lee Tomlin comes out of retirement

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Friday, December 2.

Leeds United legend warns them over Cardiff rivalry

Leeds United legend Tony Dorigo has warned his former side about the rivalry they have with Cardiff City and says they should underestimate the Bluebirds at their peril.

One of the most memorable nights at Ninian Park came almost 21 years ago in the third round of the FA Cup, when Graham Kavanagh and a famous Scott Young goal helped City beat then Premier League leaders Leeds.

And the two sides will meet again in the FA Cup's third round, which has been moved to a 2pm kick-off on Sunday, January 8, and Dorigo believes Leeds, who are once again a top-flight outfit, will have a difficult game against a side they have failed to beat in their last five meetings.

“Cardiff City represents another difficult one and we have come unstuck a few times against so-called lesser opposition. I suppose the third round of the FA Cup is huge for lots of teams and of course when a so-called bigger boy comes to town they’ll give it absolutely everything”, Dorigo wrote in his Yorkshire Evening Post column.

“Leeds can be under no illusion – this is going to be another very, very difficult game.

“Then of course you add in the rivalry of Cardiff-Leeds over the recent years, but we’ve got to do our utmost to make sure we get through because it feels like it’s about time that we did something in a cup competition.”

Lee Tomlin comes out of retirement after two months

Lee Tomlin has come out of retirement to sign for Ilkeston Town just two months after he called it a day at Doncaster Rovers.

The playmaker, 33, has agreed a deal to join the Southern League Premier Division Central side on a player-coach basis and will be in the squad for their game against Redditch United this weekend.

He links up with former Bluebirds loan player Jamie Ward, who is manager of the seventh-tier side.

Tomlin made 57 appearances for Cardiff, racking up 11 goals and 11 assists.

Hudson: Whitts memorial match a 'tough occasion'

Mark Hudson has spoken about how emotionally difficult the build-up to Peter Whittingham's memorial match against Aston Villa was on Wednesday.

The day began with former players, Hudson included, and staff members, along with Whittingham's family visiting Llandaff Cathedral for a memorial service and ended with a fitting tribute at Cardiff City Stadium in which the Bluebirds ran out 3-1 winners over Villa.

“It’s been a tough occasion,” Hudson said. “It’s been a really emotional build-up for everyone involved in it, but to have over 10,000 people come and support us, and to perform against a good side, was a fitting tribute.

“We went to Llandaff Cathedral earlier to pay our respects. It’s been difficult for everyone involved. For Amanda and Pete’s kids, to see them come out and be able to walk the team out and for everyone to be a part of it, was fantastic. It’s been well organised, so really well done to everyone involved.

“I was with him for five and a bit years. He was had a huge impact in the dressing room with his personality - he had a dry sense of humour.

"His knowledge of football was through the roof. He had magical moments on the pitch for such a long period of time. His application to it, to his sport, to his family; he was just a great human being.”

Mark McGuinness nominated for PFA award

Cardiff City defender Mark McGuinness has been recognised for his stellar performances for Sheffield Wednesday by being nominated for November's PFA Player of the Month award for League One.

McGuinness was a crucial player for the Owls throughout the month, with the defender scoring his first goal for Wednesday during their 1-0 win over Shrewsbury at Hillsborough.

It prompted manager Darren Moore to admit he is looking into the prospect of signing the 21-year-old on a permanent basis, which you can read more about here .

He is up against fellow Owl David Stockdale, Derby County's Louie Sibley, Barnsley's Adam Phillips, Lincoln City's Max Sanders and Oxford United's Billy Bodin.

Bluebirds monitoring forward

Reports have suggested that Cardiff City, along with Swansea City, Bristol City and Preston North End are after Notts County striker Macauley Langstaff. The 25-year-old has scored 18 goals in 20 National League games this season.

It comes after his summer move from Gateshead, where he scored 30 goals in 47 games in the same division.

And WalesOnline has been told that Cardiff have indeed been watching the forward's progress this season after he caught the eye last season in the fourth tier.

That's as far as the interest goes at the minute, though, and it seems more likely his next move will be to a League One team to see if he can cut it further up the Football League.

Mark Hudson has already spoken to Vincent Tan about the January transfer window and what he believes is needed to better the squad.
