Cardiff City and Swansea City will face Leicester City and Leeds United next season after a day of high drama in the Premier League.
Heading into the final round of fixtures, Leicester (19th), Leeds (18th) and Everton (17th) were all sweating on their top-flight statuses, with the Foxes facing West Ham at home, Leeds hosting Tottenham and the Toffees welcoming Bournemouth to Goodison Park.
And for a long time on Sunday afternoon it looked like Everton who would be relegated, with Leicester beating the Hammers, while the Toffees found it increasingly hard to break down the Cherries at Goodison Park.
However, just before the hour mark Abdoulaye Doucoure struck a sweet volley to give the home side the lead, and that's how it stayed, meaning their 72-year stay in the top flight was preserved. Leeds eventually lost 4-1 to Spurs, with Leicester's 2-1 win over West Ham being rendered redundant due to Everton's narrow victory.
Everton fans had to endure the agony of 10 added-minutes too due to an injury to Jordan Pickford.
It means the Foxes and Whites will be facing the Bluebirds, Swans and the rest of the Championship next term. The former were Premier League champions as recently as 2016, while Leeds return to the second tier after two seasons back in the Premier League.
Southampton were the other team to suffer demotion, while Swansea and Cardiff will discover tomorrow who out of Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday will join them in the Championship next season when the two sides meet in the League One play-off final at Wembley.
