Neil Warnock is the hot early favourite to become Cardiff City's new manager with the Bluebirds said to be "actively exploring" his return.
Cardiff parted company with Mark Hudson on Saturday following their lacklustre 1-1 draw with bottom club Wigan, which left them in a perilous position hovering above the Championship relegation zone.
Hudson was appointed in November following the surprise sacking of Steve Morison, but struggled to inject momentum in Cardiff's increasingly limp season. You can follow live updates here.
They are now on the lookout for their third manager of the campaign and Warnock is the red-hot frontrunner, according to bookmakers. The 74-year-old is 2/1 with SkyBet, with talkSPORT reporting the Bluebirds are "actively exploring" bringing him out of retirement to steer them away from danger.
Warnock is one of a number of options Cardiff are considering, with other irons also in the fire.
For the time being Hudson's assistant Dean Whitehead has been handed the job on an interim basis, with Leeds United in the FA Cup replay in midweek his first assignment.
Warnock was quizzed just last week on a possible reunion with his former club but played a straight bat when asked on radio.
"I think you are always going to get linked, aren't you? I think someone linked me with Portsmouth as well, I think I'm going to get linked with that," said Warnock.
"I don't work until end of February, March time, Jim (tongue in cheek). I do March and April that's all I do! So it's a bit early for me to be going back in."
