A COUPLE have had a lucky escape after a car crashed into their home in a late-night smash.
Emergency services were called out at about 10.20pm on Tuesday following the incident at the junction of the A198 and The Pleasance in Aberlady.
A damaged white Kia Rio was still lodged in the front of the house – located opposite Aberlady Parish Church – the following morning.
The homeowner, who wished to remain anonymous, told our sister paper the East Lothian Courier: “We were sitting watching the television in the living room and just heard the impact.
“It about gave us a heart attack.
“It was a horrible shock and quite a fright.
“I just got on the phone to 999 and my husband opened the door and found a car halfway in the house.”
Officers from Police Scotland, Scottish Ambulance Service and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were all called to the incident.
East Lothian Council was also called and put barriers in place to make the area safe.
Utility companies were also in attendance to check for any electrical or gas damage.
The homeowner, who has lived in the property for 30 years, said that they did not get back in the house until closer to 2am and struggled to sleep.
Fortunately, it is understood that nobody was hurt, which the homeowner described as “the main thing”.
She said: “Police took a statement.
“They will need whatever input they have to get the car removed.
“That is what we are waiting on – somebody to get in touch with us.
“The emergency services were all great, including ScottishPower and the gas people.
“We could not have asked for a better service, to be fair.”
The homeowner said that it was not the first incident to happen on that stretch of road and called for something to be done to tackle speeding in the area.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 10.25pm to attend a one-car road traffic collision in Aberlady.
“We dispatched an ambulance and two special operations response teams (SORT) to the scene.”
Firefighters from Haddington and North Berwick were joined by colleagues in special appliances from Sighthill, Bo’ness and Dalkeith.
Crews stepped down at about 12.20am yesterday (Wednesday).
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 10.20pm on Tuesday, July 21, we were called to a report of a crash involving two vehicles in the High Street area of Aberlady.
“One of the vehicles collided with a property.
“Emergency services attended and there were no reported injuries.
“The driver of one of the vehicles was charged in connection with a road traffic offence and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”
