HYDERABAD: It had all the trappings of bizarre twists and turns which kept Nalgonda cops chasing all day in pursuit of a solution.
The drama began when a woman was trying to prevent her brother from jumping into a canal, their car parked on the bund suddenly moved ahead and fell into the canal. The worried siblings ran away from the place triggering speculation that someone fled after pushing the car into the canal.
While a police team located the siblings after one of them called to report about the car, another team was busy trying to fish out the vehicle from the canal.
At around 2 pm, two youngsters who were at Vemulapally canal at Goguvanigudem village in Nalgonda saw a car stopping next to the opposite bank of the canal. A man and a woman got down from the car. After they took out luggage, they suddenly saw the car plunging into the canal.
“One of the youngsters took video of the car floating in the water for some distance. The youngsters later told local cops that the two persons had pushed the car into the canal and ran away into the nearby fields after they heard the youngsters’ hollerings,” Nalgonda district SP Rema Rajeshwari said.
While Vemulapally police began efforts to fish out the car submerged in the water about 800 metres away in the canal, another team launched a manhunt to locate the two persons.
Later in the night, P Mallikharjun (30) and his sister Vigneswari (27) of Tipparthi in Nalgonda approached police claiming that their car was stolen.
When police showed them the video of the car floating in the water, Vigneswari spilled the beans. She said that she and her brother had gone for a casual trip in the afternoon. Mallikharjun, who is believed to have suicidal tendencies, stopped the car next to the canal and wanted to jump into the water to end his life.
“Vigneswari claimed that while she was trying to stop her brother from killing himself, the car suddenly moved to the front and fell into the canal. The family of the siblings has mental health problems. We are questioning them. They claimed there was nothing in the car. Our team is trying to bring out the car,” the SP said.
