Car expert warns popular £2 scratch trick could 'deteriorate' your paint work

No matter how hard you try, it's inevitable you'll get a scratch in the paint of your car at some point. It might feel like the end of the world at the time, but there are ways to fix it.

It can be expensive to pay for an expert or special products to repair scratches on your vehicle, especially as people attempt to save their pennies during the cost of living crisis. Instead, some people are trying out different hacks in order to cut costs.

However, despite some people claiming they work, and expert has warned against a hack which has resurfaced on social media.

At a glance it might sound too good to be true - as people have claimed you can get rid of scratches on your car for just £2, using two ingredients you might already have in your kitchen. That's because it is - you could end up with more damage than you previously had.

In the videos, people can be seen pouring Diet Coke on the scratch, followed by talcum powder, and after rubbing it for a few seconds with a rag, it has supposedly disappeared.

Others have since tried the hack and found it doesn't work, but one expert has warned against even trying it, as it could potentially damage your vehicles paint, making the situation worse than it already was.

Michael Bissona , Motoring Expert, at the International Drivers Association, told The Mirror: "I want to clarify that using Diet Coke and talcum powder to repair scratches on paintwork is not a recommended method and can potentially damage your vehicle's paint.

"The acidic nature of Diet Coke can erode the protective layers of the paint, leading to further deterioration over time. Additionally, talcum powder does not possess the necessary properties to effectively fill or conceal scratches, and its application may result in uneven textures or discolouration."

Instead, Michael recommends always using professional solutions in order to fix the scratches. He explained: "It's always advisable to rely on appropriate automotive products and techniques recommended by professionals to ensure the safety and longevity of your vehicle's paintwork."
