Caoimhin Kelleher's former club sent brilliant message from Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool's Carabao Cup win

Caoimhin Kelleher's old club were sent a brilliant message by Jurgen Klopp after their former player scored the penalty that won Liverpool the Carabao Cup.

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper blasted the decisive spot-kick before Kepa Arrizabalaga fired high over the bar, as Liverpool prevailed 11-10 in a shoot-out of the highest quality against Chelsea last month.

The Cork native played joined the Reds' academy from Ringmahon Rangers in 2015 and his former club received the jersey worn by Kelleher in the final, as well as a handwritten letter from Klopp.

It read: "To everyone at Ringmahon Rangers. Thank you for sending us Caoimhin. He's done you proud! Cheers."

Sharing photos of the jersey and note on Twitter, the Cork club said: "What a lovely gift to get for the Clubhouse. Caoimhin Kellehers Cup final @LFC winning Jersey. And to top it off a hand written letter from manager Jurgen Klopp. Thanks so much to the @johngibbonsblog from @TheAnfieldWrap for sorting us out."

The Liverpool boss described Kelleher as "the best number-two goalie in the world" after the win over Chelsea.

“Alisson Becker is the best goalie in the world for me,” said Klopp.

“There are other good goalkeepers out there but this goalie is absolutely insane.

“But to be honest for me Caoimhin Kelleher is the best number-two goalie in the world as well.

“The game he played tonight was absolutely incredible.

“I can remember at least two incredible saves, and probably there were more.

“So he proved that the decision to line him up was absolutely right.

“And then in a very spectacular penalty shoot-out he showed the whole range of his skill set.

“He finished one off with his really skilled feet. So top class.

“They call it the people’s cup, but the whole journey was a squad journey, and that’s what I love most about it.”

Kelleher is expected to start for Ireland against Lithuania on Tuesday night after his performance against Belgium on Saturday, with Gavin Bazunu again missing out due to illness.
