A defendant told magistrates he was caught with cannabis because it helps him control his epilepsy. Terrence White addressed JPs at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (February 15) about the reason he had a small amount of the drug.
And one JP told him: "The reasons you give are convincing and you don't have to be punished any further than that." White, 38, of Yorke Drive, Newark, pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, in Jubilee Street, Newark.
He was in a vehicle police stopped because one person inside had no seatbelt on. Officers smelt cannabis and asked if anyone had the drug inside the vehicle - with White volunteering he had a small amount and accepted it was for personal use.

White told the court: "I agree with everything. I got caught with the cananbis as it helps me control my epilepsy and things like that. I am on Employment Support Allowance and I get £169 a fortnight."
White was conditionally discharged for 12 months, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £26 and costs of £40.
