Canelo Alvarez and Premier Boxing Champions are in discussions for a potential reunion following their recent split, with two fights remaining on a three-fight deal signed in June. Alvarez, boxing's top star, is reportedly in talks with PBC for a May 4 pay-per-view fight against fellow Mexican fighter Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas.
Alvarez, ESPN's No. 4 pound-for-pound boxer, was initially lined up for an undisputed super middleweight championship defense against Jermall Charlo in May. However, due to a failure to agree on terms, Alvarez was free to explore other options. Talks of a return to streaming service DAZN for bouts against Munguia and Edgar Berlanga fell through, leading Alvarez back to the negotiating table with PBC.
The 33-year-old champion is considering one- and two-fight deals with PBC, with a preference for fighting on Mexican Independence Day weekend in September. Alvarez's previous fight under the PBC partnership saw him defeat Jermell Charlo to retain his undisputed super middleweight championship.
With a potential Alvarez-Charlo fight losing appeal, a matchup with Munguia emerged as a more lucrative option. Munguia, ESPN's No. 4 super middleweight, is coming off a career-best victory over John Ryder in January and has shown improvement under trainer Freddie Roach.
Alvarez, who has been boxing's top attraction since Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s retirement, boasts an impressive resume with wins over Gennadiy Golovkin and titles in four weight classes. Public interest is also high for a potential fight between Alvarez and rising star David Benavidez.
PBC's stable includes star boxer Gervonta Davis, who is scheduled to return against Frank Martin this summer. Additionally, PBC's upcoming event with Amazon's Prime Video on March 30 in Las Vegas will feature a pay-per-view headlined by Tim Tszyu against Keith Thurman.
