Canelo Alvarez admits he has little to gain from a trilogy clash against Gennady Golovkin after the pair agreed to fight in September.
Alvarez will put his undisputed super-middleweights belts on the line against Golovkin on September 17. The Mexican came up short in his effort to win the WBA light-heavyweight title agains Dmitry Bivol earlier this month, suffering his first loss in almost a decade.
The fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend marks almost four years since their controversial rematch which Alvarez won by majority decision. The rivals first met in 2017 when they fought to a questionable split draw.
Alvarez insists few fighters would accept a fight with Golovkin if they were in his position, telling DAZN : "I risk everything to keep making history when I don't need to risk anything. I've already achieved so many things. I'm in a position where I don't have to risk anything, and I still do it. Nobody does that when they are in a position like the one I'm in."

Following his recent loss, Alvarez lost his spot as the pound-for-pound No.1 but he still holds that accolade in his own mind. "The truth is that I don't know how they handle that kind of thing (the pound-for-pound rankings), but I still feel I'm the best," he continued said. "Tell me another fighter who is trying that in other categories, going down and up in weight."
Golovkin set up a trilogy with Alvarez by recently stopping Ryota Murata in his first fight since 2020. Alvarez wasn't impressed with his rival's win and thinks the Kazakh has fed off of his name throughout his boxing career.
"It's always been very personal with him. That will never go away. After we finished the two fights, it still feels [very personal). He has never stopped talking about me. If you see, I never mentioned his name," Alvarez continued.
"I've always been in his mouth, he's always talked about me, and that makes it even more personal. The fact that there is this rivalry puts an extra element there. It makes me train harder. I try harder. Personally, I sometimes feel better that it exists."
Alvarez's return to super-middleweight doesn't mean his hopes of winning world titles at light-heavyweight are done and dusted. He insisted that he will try and avenge his loss to Bivol with a "new strategy".
"We are going to try again," he added. "Only that for a second fight, I would look to be in much better physical condition, prepare myself for the 12 rounds. . A different strategy to the one I used with my opponents at 168 pounds."
