Cancelled Game of Thrones spinoff reveals Naomi Watts' regal character

Behind-the-scenes images reveal look at character from scrapped GoT prequel.

In a recent Instagram post by hair and makeup artist Flora Moody, behind-the-scenes images of Naomi Watts' character from the scrapped Game of Thrones prequel, previously referred to as Bloodmoon, have been unveiled. Although the unaired pilot was completed, HBO decided to pass on the project and instead focused on developing House of the Dragon. The prequel would have transported viewers to the Age of Heroes, a time approximately 10,000 years before Daenerys Targaryen's birth.

The images shared on Instagram provide a captivating glimpse of Watts' regal-looking character. The actor's transformation beautifully aligns with the intricate hair and costume designs seen in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. From photos taken in the pilot's hair and makeup truck to camera tests taken on set with full lighting, these behind-the-scenes images showcase the attention to detail given to Watts' character.

While the prequel was originally referred to as Bloodmoon, no official title had been decided upon before HBO shelved the project. However, author and executive producer George R.R. Martin previously suggested that the series could have been called The Long Night. Set thousands of years prior to the events of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, the prequel was intended to delve into the looming Long Night War with the White Walkers.

Headed by showrunner Jane Goldman, known for her collaborations with Matthew Vaughn, the prequel would have featured an impressive cast. Alongside Naomi Watts, other notable actors included Josh Whitehouse, Toby Regbo, Georgie Henley, and Naomi Ackie. While the character Watts portrayed in the unaired pilot remains unspecified, she was described as 'a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.' The new images of her character, with meticulously styled blonde hair, have sparked speculation that she may have had a connection to Lann the Clever, a foundational figure in House Lannister's history.

Lann the Clever, known as the cunning trickster who acquired Casterly Rock from its original rulers, could have potentially been tied to Watts' character, creating an intriguing link to Game of Thrones. However, it is uncertain if this was the intended storyline for her character in the prequel.

Game of Thrones, created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, is a television series based on George R.R. Martin's book series, A Song of Ice and Fire. The epic saga revolves around the ongoing power struggles between the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros in their quest to claim the coveted Iron Throne. The series premiered on HBO in 2011 and quickly gained immense popularity, becoming one of the defining shows of the 'Golden Age' of television.

Receiving critical acclaim and winning numerous awards, including 38 Primetime Emmy Awards, Game of Thrones has garnered a vast and devoted international fan base. Throughout its run, the series captivated viewers with its immersive storytelling, complex characters, and stunning visuals. As fans eagerly await the arrival of House of the Dragon, these behind-the-scenes images offer a glimpse into the world of the ill-fated Bloodmoon prequel and the unrealized potential it held. So while we may never witness Naomi Watts' character come to life on screen, we can still cherish the enduring legacy of Game of Thrones and look forward to the future of the franchise.
