This alteration comes after the ceremony was held virtually in 2020 and continued in that format last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, a glimmer of normalcy returned in 2021 when Canadian Screen Week took place at Toronto's Meridian Hall from April 11-14. Unfortunately, due to venue availability issues, a decision was made to shift Canadian Screen Week 2024 to May.
The Canadian Screen Awards are set to be held at the CBC Broadcast Centre in Toronto, with the final-night awards ceremony scheduled to be broadcast by the public broadcaster on May 31. To build anticipation, the nominees for this highly anticipated event will be announced on March 6.
The CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, Tammy Frick, explained that various factors influenced the date and venue changes. Alongside logistical considerations, Frick mentioned a concern for budgetary efficiency to ensure an exceptional experience for attendees and viewers alike.
The Canadian Screen Awards were introduced in 2012, effectively replacing the separate Gemini and Genie award shows. This consolidation led to a single, grand event celebrating the best in Canadian film and television. Tammy Frick took on the role of CEO at the Academy in late 2022, bringing with her 27 years of experience as the executive director of the Cinéfest Sudbury Film Festival in northern Ontario. She succeeded Beth Janson, who served as CEO until April 2022 before briefly assuming the position of COO at the Toronto Film Festival.
