Canadian couple skip trip to Giant's Causeway for 'incredible' East Belfast pizza

A Canadian couple visiting Belfast say they made "the right decision" choosing to visit a popular pizza restaurant rather than the Giants Causeway.

Derek Villeneuve and Marisa Smith from Calgary are in the city for a short visit while they attend a wedding in Ireland and had been excited to try out East Belfast pizza restaurant Flout, after seeing reviews of it online.

They say they had been thinking about trying the pizza for months before their arrival but were disappointed to discover that it was not open on the Wednesday that they had planned to attend.

However, after messaging the Flout on Instagram and telling them of how they had travelled across the Atlantic in the hopes of trying their pizza, Flout felt that they could not let the couple down and invited them in to enjoy a special pie.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Derek said: "We are big foodies and had been researching places we could try in Ireland when we found a review of Flout and were blown away by how good it looked and were determined to try it out for ourselves.

"Our original plan had been to spend a day at the Giant's Causeway, but when we thought that we could try out the pizza we decided to give it a miss and go there instead, but when we checked the hours on Wednesday morning, we were so disappointed to see that it wasn't open.

"We thought that it wouldn't hurt to send them a message and tell them where we were from and how much we were looking forward to trying their food.

"We didn't expect for them to even read our message and were over the moon when Peter got back to us and invited us down to try the pizza."

Belfast Live joined the couple as they tasted their specially made pizza with them agreeing that they made the right decision and that the pizza was "incredible".

Marisa said: "We are so thankful to Flout for inviting us down. It was such a lovely gesture from them and it has really made our trip. The pizza was even better than we expected, we basically inhaled it!"

Peter Thompson of Flout Pizza said that when he saw the message from the couple he felt that it would be good to do something nice for them as they had come so far in the hopes of trying out their pizza.

He said: "At Flout we don't tend to have the most regular opening hours and after seeing the message from Derek and Marisa we felt that we should do something for them seeing as they have come so far to try our pizza.

"It was lovely that we were able to do this for them and are thrilled that they were able to enjoy some Flout pizza in the end."
