A Canadian deal hunter is gaining traction online after sharing what she says happened when she purchased two penny items at a Walmart store.
In her video, which has gotten over 76,500 views, TikTok creator Christine Granger (@hustleforthedeals) says her shopping experience ended with her spending time in jail.
What Happened During Her $0.02 Walmart Hunt?
“I thought I’d come on here and talk about the time that I went to jail for legally purchasing 2-cent items at Walmart,” she begins.
Granger says she had spent the day traveling around the Ottawa and Gatineau area collecting heavily discounted items before arriving at a Hawkesbury location.
“I find a massive table tennis and a couple other small things for a penny… so I bought it all,” she says.
According to her, the Walmart staff intervened.
“The employees decided that I was not leaving with those items, and they put their hands on me and the person I was with and were very physically aggressive,” she says.
She admits she reacted poorly in the moment. “I got aggressive back… I didn’t react well,” she says. “We’re not talking about loss prevention or security, we’re talking about cashiers.”
Granger says the situation led to her arrest. “I ended up going to jail for two weeks,” she says.
She says her lawyer told her the purchase itself was legal. “Whatever an item scans at… once you pay for it, you own it,” she recalls.
According to her, a judge later agreed. “What she did was perfectly legal. The aggression, no… but also the employee should have never put their hands on me either,” she says the judge ruled.
Granger also claims police confiscated the items she had purchased that day and returned them to the store. “Everything that I worked hard for that day, and drove all around the area to collect,” she says.
Commenters Ask About The Outcome
In the comments, viewers questioned whether she pursued legal action.
“Tell us you sued?” one person wrote.
“Couldn’t find a lawyer to help me. No one wanted to fight Walmart. They’re known to have a huge legal team apparently,” she responded.
Others shared similar frustrations.
“They take away .02 items from me they won’t let me buy them,” another wrote.
“They cant – report them to head office as head office has told them to let customers buy them if they find them,” Granger replied.
Some sided with her. “Idk why cashier wanna be heroes man, If worked in Walmart I wouldn’t care,” a third added.
Why Does Walmart Price Items At $0.02?
According to reports online, items are sometimes priced at $0.02 when they are meant to be pulled from shelves, whether due to recalls, clearance cycles, or inventory resets.
However, if an item still scans at that price at checkout, customers may be able to purchase it.
In Canada, the Scanner Price Accuracy Code is meant to prevent discrepancies between shelf prices and scanned prices. Under that system, customers can sometimes receive discounts or even free items if pricing errors occur.
