Can women take viagra? What happens if they do?

Viagra is a medication for the sexual dysfunction in men, but what if women take it? How would it affect them? Would it have the same effect on women as it has on men? Is it safe for women?

Read this article to find answers to these common questions around Viagra and women.

Viagra or sildenafil citrate works by relaxing the muscles of the penis and improving blood flow to it so that when a man is sexually aroused he can get an erection. Viagra aims at improving sexual performance in men who find it difficult to attain it.

Several health reports say just like in men, Viagra can increase blood flow to the genitals in women and consequently can lead to an increase in sensitivity, arousal and orgasm.

But there are limitations to this.

There are several other factors that need to be considered when taking viagra to improve libido in women. If these factors are ignored and proper doses are not taken, one is likely to have headache, nasal congestion, vision problems, palpitations and indigestion.

As per a 2014 study, the “blue miracle pill,” although easily available, is not always the right cure. "In fact, female sexual arousal disorder, as a complex disease, may depend on several underlying medical conditions that need to be appropriately diagnosed and treated. Therefore, the general practitioner should immediately exclude chronic antidepressant treatments, surgical procedures, or radiotherapy of the pelvis and ascertain the presence of possible systemic pathologies such as endocrine, vascular, and neurological disorders," it suggests and says that non-hormonal treatment like prescribing viagra should be kept as the last option.

Since there are several underlying reasons for low sex drive in women, the first and foremost need is to have a proper diagnosis of the condition. Go to your doctor and discuss your issues. Inform your doctor about the chronic conditions you have and the medications you are prescribed for it.
