Can Rishi Sunak’s global summit solve AI problems? Tech & Science Daily podcast

World leaders and experts have jetted in to attend Rishi Sunak’s global artificial intelligence summit.

Over the next two days at Bletchley Park, the Prime Minister wants to lay the groundwork for the safe use of AI. Billionaire tech entrepreneur, Elon Musk, is also expected to sit down for an interview with the PM at the summit tomorrow.

It’s as the UK pledges £38 million for AI projects including labs in Africa. It’s part of an £80 million collaboration between the UK, Canada, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to boost “safe and responsible” programming. The money’s going towards creating at least eight AI laboratories at African universities, to help make countries across the continent “influential in the worldwide conversation on AI”.

Scientists have made the biggest simulation of our cosmos ever.The virtual universe has the mass of 300 billion galaxies, and the work had to be spread over 30,000 computer processors.

Researchers created the simulation, named FLAMINGO, by taking the vast amount of data that has been gathered by telescopes, such as Nasa’s James Webb Space Telescope, as well as other projects.

Chinese scientists say that some children born deaf in the country have finally been able to hear after breakthrough gene therapy. Researchers from Fudan University, fitted the deaf children’s inner ears with an implant containing a harmless virus carrying a new genetic code.
