Can free agents and loanees still be signed now the transfer window has closed?

Leeds United had quite a busy January transfer window. Defender Max Wober arrived from Red Bull Salzburg, former Hoffenheim striker Georginio Rutter were the first two additions to manager Jesse Marsch's squad. It was then boosted in the last 24 hours by the signing of Weston McKennie and Diogo Monteiro.

If the Whites boss feels as though further additions must be made between the beginning of February and the end of the season, is he able to make those changes?

Can English clubs sign players on loan after 11pm on deadline day?

For Premier League clubs once Tuesday night's deadline passed, they cannot loan in anyone until the window reopens in the summer.

In previous years, the window would remain open after deadline to allow loans to clubs across Europe, however that rule was scrapped by the F.A following heavy pressure from FIFA.

What about free agents then?

Clubs in the Premier League are permitted to sign free agents at any time of the year, even after the deadline has passed on Tuesday, however must follow specific rules to do so.

Crucially, the free agent must have left his previous club before the closure of the transfer window if he is to sign for a new club.

This famously happened to Sol Campbell back in September 2009, when he was released by Notts County just a month after signing for them on a free transfer.

He then had to stay as a free agent until January 2010 when he was signed by his former club Arsenal.
