I’ve found a budget alternative to Augustinus Bader’s rich cream – for £59 less

I tested the viral high-end moisturiser against this lesser-know Korean formula – but how did it fare? - (Lucy Smith/The Independent)

Few moisturisers have achieved quite the same cult status as Augustinus Bader’s ‘the rich cream’ (£80, Johnlewis.com). In beauty circles, it’s well know as a restorative formula that people can justify spending on, by reframing as an ‘investment’ purchase. This is thanks to the intrigue surrounding the TFC8 complex – the brand’s patented blend that’s famously kept under cloak and dagger.

That air of exclusivity is exactly what sent me down a rabbit hole. I wanted to know if the formula’s skin-softening, barrier-bolstering reputation is truly unique, or if the same nourishing payoff could be found elsewhere without the eye-watering price. After spending weeks combing through ingredients lists, comparing textures and actives, and looking beyond the marketing gloss, I found a moisturiser that delivers a surprisingly similar rich, smoothing feel for far less.
