Can a flippable mattress improve restless sleep? I tested Eve Sleep’s wunderflip

The mattress boasts a hybrid pocket spring and foam design - (Daisy Lester)

Finding the best mattress is the difference between feeling on top of the world and walking around like a zombie all day. Whether you’re a side sleeper looking for pressure relief or a back sleeper looking for zoned support, it all comes down to personal preference.

With dozens of brands vying for your attention – including Nectar and Emma – it can be tricky to know which names to trust and which to avoid. I’ve tested various models over the years, including the Simba hybrid, Dormeo octasmart and Premier Inn x Silentnight mattress.

I’ve learnt what makes a mattress supportive (think durable edges and high density foam), alongside which features ease my restless sleeping habits, such as motion regulation and temperature cooling. Eve, a big-player in the sleep industry, took the innovation further with its Wunderflip mattress.

The hybrid model – part springs, part foam – promises customisable comfort with its dual design. According to the brand, one side is soft and the other is firm, depending on your preferences. The cushioned top layer can be zipped onto either side. But how does this work in practise?

Promising to reduce motion movement and align your body in whichever position you sleep in, the Eve mattress carries some other big claims. As a light sleeper prone to bouts of insomnia, I was keen to try it out. For context, it can take me hours to get to sleep sometimes, so comfort and support is key, and I wake at the slightest disturbance. Here’s how I got on with Eve Sleep’s wunderflip ultimate hybrid.

I’m a notoriously bad sleeper and wake up easily, so I’m always cautious about mattresses that claim to improve sleep quality. But the Eve wunderflip ultimate hybrid sleep mattress genuinely impressed me, particularly when it came to movement isolation and overall comfort.

Initial thoughts

Delivery was straightforward and far easier than expected considering how heavy the mattress is. The wunderflip is rolled up in a box – which the team carries upstairs for you – and after unpacking, you simply leave it to expand for around three or four hours before sleeping on it.

Visually, it looks sleek and modern with Eve Sleep’s signature yellow shade on the topper zip. It boasts a much more premium feel than some hybrid mattresses I’ve tested. Once dressed with bedding, it gives the whole bed a polished, hotel-style look.

Firmness and pressure relief

The mattress itself feels substantial. It’s deep, supportive and noticeably weighty, which adds to the sense of quality. The wunderflip’s star design feature is that it offers two firmness options in one mattress. You can choose between a slightly firmer or softer feel depending on your preference: simple flip the mattress (there are handles on the side for ease). I found the firmer side ideal – it’s supportive without feeling rigid. There’s not too much of a difference with the softer side, which feels slightly more bouncy but equally supportive. Those who are particularly sensitive will notice more of a difference.

Once flipped, the removable cover (it can be machine washed at 40 degrees, too) must be zipped onto the new top layer. This process is a little fiddly, but worth the pay-off – it’s soft, lightly cushioned and breathable.

In terms of comfort, it strikes an excellent balance between firm and cushioning. My body felt properly aligned throughout the night, especially around my back and hips, but there was still enough softness from the top layers to feel comfortable and cosy around my shoulders. I found myself settling into a comfortable sleeping position much faster than with previous mattresses, with far less tossing and readjusting before falling asleep.

Edge support

When it comes to edge support, I never felt like I was slipping off the side of the mattress or rolling toward the middle during the night, which I’ve experienced with softer designs before. However, the mattress’ stability on the bed frame isn’t great – it often moved position overnight and needed recentering in the morning.

Motion transfer

As someone who’s easily disrupted during the night, motion isolation was one of the areas I was most concerned about. Thankfully, the weight distribution across the mattress is excellent. If one person moves, turns over or gets out of bed, the movement barely transfers to the other side. There’s none of that overly bouncy feel that some hybrid mattresses can have, which made a huge difference to my sleep quality.

Temperature regulation

I’m usually sceptical about temperature-regulating claims. But the combination of breathable foams and pocket springs in the Eve mattress allowed for good airflow, and I never felt clammy during the night. The quilted top layer adds softness without trapping heat, which helps avoid the usual overheating and constant repositioning that can interrupt sleep. During hot weather, I found sleeping with the window open allowed for more sweet relief than the mattress itself – I didn’t notice any temperature regulation in these extra balmy conditions. But for year-round sleep, it’s a great all-rounder.

Maintenance

Maintenance is simple too. It’s a single-sided mattress, so there’s no need to flip it – unless you want to alternate the soft and firm sides – but rotating it occasionally helps keep wear evenly distributed over time.

Is the Eve Sleep mattress worth it?

Eve Sleep’s wunderflip mattress combines the comfort of a hybrid design – the pocket springs provide support and the foam achieve softness – with the customisable nature of a dual-side mattress. The firm side is just the right amount of rigid while the soft side is ideal for sensitive sleepers who prefer more cushioning. Delivery is seamless thanks to the rolled design while flipping or rotating the mattress is just as easy owing to handles on each side. Temperature regulation is nothing to write home about, but as a restless sleeper, I found motion disturbance was great and the level of cushioning helped me nod off quickly. Firmly mid-range – it’s cheaper than Hypnos but more expensive than Premier Inn – the wunderflip is premium with enough features to justify the splurge.

How I tested the Eve Sleep mattress

I’ve been testing the Eve Sleep mattress for three months. For context, I’m a light, easily-disturbed sleeper who’s prone to bouts of insomnia. The slightest movement from my partner can wake me up, so I need a mattress with impressive movement isolation. Having tested other mattresses in the past, I’ve also learned how important support is to a well-rested sleep.

As such, I tested this carefully, conducting a range of different tests to really see whether the mattress isolated movement. Of course, my testing criteria expanded to other areas, including the following factors:
