Some of the region’s most misunderstood characters could be set to be pardoned if a campaign by the group Witches of Scotland is successful.
They are calling on the Scottish Government to help right what they see as the terrible wrongs from Scotland’s past and are hoping to win legal pardons and official apologies for an estimated 3837 people tried as witches, two-thirds of whom were executed and burned.
And, if successful, that could mean justice for the likes of nursemaid Kate McNiven, who was sentenced to die by strangling and burning on the Knock of Crieff, and the Dunning witch known as Maggie Wall or Walls – the subject of one of the first monuments erected in memory of a witch in Scotland.
