Cammy Devlin's 'unique' Hearts qualities rewarded as Robbie Neilson reveals Australia call-up emotions aren't a first

Robbie Neilson is delighted that Cammy Devlin’s “unique” role in the Hearts team has been recognised with a place in Australia’s World Cup squad. But he also revealed that getting the call from Graham Arnold isn't the first time the midfielder has gotten emotional.

Socceroos boss Arnold explained that Devlin broke down in tears when he told him he’d made the cut for the 26-man squad that will jet off to Qatar this month. Devlin only made his full international debut in September, coming on as a sub in a 2-0 win over New Zealand.

Now he’ll take part in the biggest football show on earth in the Middle East. He’s joined in the squad by Tynecastle teammates Nathaniel Atkinson and fit again Kye Rowles, and their inclusion ensures that the Jambos will receive at least £300,000 from FIFA as part of the world governing body’s club benefits programme.

Neilson is delighted for Devlin after bringing him to the capital in September 2021. And his reaction to getting the nod was no surprise after how he responded to a fine for a red card against Rangers last month.

Neilson said: “That’s Cammy Devlin. He was nearly crying when I fined him for getting sent off a couple of weeks ago!

“He’s a great guy. Wears his heart on his sleeve and that’s exactly what he does on the pitch and I’m just delighted for him.

“He was probably the one of the three who was probably the most uncertain about whether he would get in because they’ve got real strength in that central area. But his performances this season, especially in Europe, have pushed him into that 26-man squad, which is great. They’re strong in there but Cammy does a specific role within the team. Not a lot of guys do that.

“You’ve got midfielders that go and attack and do different things. Cammy will sit in front of the back four and defend, make tackles and bring energy. You need different aspects to your squad and your team. I think he’s pretty unique in what he brings to the group.”

Having the trio in Qatar is justification for them making the move from Down Under. It also backs Hearts’ judgement in signing them.

Neilson added: “It’s outstanding for the players. Firstly, I’m delighted for them. “They took a chance coming to Hearts. It’s always a gamble when you come half way around the world.

“Thankfully we’ve helped them get to the World Cup, but they’ve helped us as well. For both sides, it’s exceptional.

“We’ve got three players playing at the World Cup now. I think it's the first time we’ve ever had that.

“There’s a payment but I don’t know how much it is or when we will get it. The most important thing is we’ve got guys there. Scotland isn't there, but now we’ve got someone to watch and support.

“It’s almost a once in a lifetime opportunity for these guys. You look at Scotland and how long it’s been since we’ve been to these tournaments. They’ve got an opportunity to go and be part of it in a 26-man squad. Hopefully they get game time and hopefully they do well.”
