Cammell Laird have confirmed they are hiring 44 new apprentices over the next four months.
The Birkenhead shipyard posted advertisements for a number of job roles in conjunction with The Engineering College. Jobs are available for anybody with a passion for engineering and a grade four (C) in their English, Maths and Science GCSE's.
Job roles include welders, fabricators, pipe fitters, shipwrights, riggers and many more. Cammell Laird has a rich history and an exciting future, working on a range of ships and vessels, in the most unique and diverse ways.

All of the roles have room for progression with Cammell Laird, with some learners progressing into roles in the Technical Office, QA, Management and Supervision roles. Here's a full list of all the jobs available:
Welder
Entry Requirements: Grade 4 (C) and above in Maths, English and Science, and a passion for engineering.
Welding is a fabrication process whereby two or more parts are fused together by means of heat, pressure or both forming a join as the parts cool. Welding is usually used on metals and thermoplastics but can also be used on wood.

Plating/Fabrication
Entry Requirements: Grade 4 (C) and above in Maths, English and Science, and a passion for engineering.
Plating/Fabrication is the process of constructing products by combining typically standardised parts using one or more individual processes. For example, steel fabrication is the production of metal structures using a range of processes such as cutting, bending and assembling.
Cammell Laird are looking to take on 16 Platers/Fabricators ahead of their September 2022 recruitment. The pay rate for a Plating/Fabrication Apprentice is £6.28 per hour (The hourly rate will increase as you progress each year in your apprenticeship)
Pipe fitter
Entry Requirements: Grade 4 (C) and above in Maths, English and Science, and a passion for engineering.
A pipefitter, also known as a steamfitter, is a tradesperson trained in organizing, assembling, creating and maintaining mechanical piping systems that must withstand high pressure. These types of systems are usually industrial, include heating and cooling systems, and involve work with steam, ventilation, hydraulics, chemicals, and fuel.
Cammell Laird are looking to take on four Pipefitters ahead of their September 2022 recruitment. The pay rate for a Pipefitting Apprentice is £6.28 per hour (The hourly rate will increase as you progress each year in your apprenticeship)
Mechanical Fitter
Entry Requirements: Grade 4 (C) and above in Maths, English and Science, and a passion for engineering
Mechanical fitters fit and assemble metal parts to fabricate production machines and other equipment. They use a range of tools and engineering techniques to maintain and repair mechanical plant machinery and equipment to operational standards.
Cammell Laird are looking to take on eight Mechanical Fitters ahead of their September 2022 recruitment. The pay rate for a Mechanical Fitter Apprentice is £6.28 per hour (The hourly rate will increase as you progress each year in your apprenticeship)
Shipwright
Entry Requirements: Grade 4 (C) and above in Maths, English and Science, and a passion for engineering
A shipwright builds and repairs boats and ships of all sizes, from handmade canoes to large naval vessels. Shipwrights design and build ships according to the specifications of individuals or companies. Depending on the size of the ship, shipwrights may use hand and power tools to construct the boat themselves, or they may oversee a team of shipbuilders.

Plant Maintenance (electrical)
Entry Requirements: Grade 4 (C) and above in Maths, English and Science, and a passion for engineering
Plant maintenance (Electrical) is looking at the maintenance of machinery in the yard and they keep the shipyard running as they are constantly running maintenance around the shipyard. You will be responsible for maintaining and installing electrical circuits and systems, to keep Cammell Laird at the heart of the British Industry

Plant Maintenance (mechanical)
Entry Requirements: Grade 4 (C) and above in Maths, English and Science, and a passion for engineering
Maintenance engineers’ work involves checking, repairing and servicing machinery, equipment, systems and infrastructures. Maintenance engineers ensure that industrial machinery and equipment run smoothly and reliably

Rigger
Entry Requirements: Grade 4 (C) and above in Maths, English and Science, and a passion for engineering
A rigger is a person who works with a ship’s rigging, the system of ropes, cables, and accompanying equipment such as winches and pulleys that a ship carries. Riggers on a ship use the rigging to move heavy loads, such as when cargo is being loaded or unloaded at the port, and in the case of a sailing vessel, they also use it to adjust the ship’s sails to control course and speed while at sea.
They are also responsible for inspecting and maintaining the ship’s rigging to keep it in working order. Cammell Laird are looking to take on two Riggers ahead of their September 2022 recruitment.
