Cameron Norrie suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar losing 6-3 6-2 in his opening match of the Abierto Mexicant Telcel.

The first set was a tight affair and remained on serve before Jodar broke Norrie in the eighth game - on his second attempt - and went on to serve out the set.

An out-of-sorts Norrie then struggled to respond in the second set and was blown away by the power hitting blitz from the 19-year-old who reeled off five games in a row during which he only lost two points.

The result was a straight sets victory for the impressive teenager, and world no. 114, and the biggest triumph of his career to date. Jodar will now face either Grigor Dimitrov or Terence Atmane in the second round.

The win was also Jodar’s first victory in the ATP 500 and came after he was awarded a wildcard spot in the Mexican Open main draw.

Jodar, who is from Leganes, was entered into the qualifying stage of the tournament but organisers moved him into the main draw due to his previous results on tour. He reached the final of the Challenger 125 in Canberra as well as the second round of the Australian Open having come through the qualifiers to reach the main draw of a Grand Slam for the very first time.

The teenager had also impressed in two previous ATP tour events, reaching the last-16 of the Delray Beach Open before being downed by Taylor Fritz and successfully reaching the main draw of the Dallas Open after straight set wins over Murphy Cassone and Mitchell Krueger in qualifying.

Beating Norrie, in a match that only lasted 56 minutes, means a boost to Jodar’s ranking as the teenager is now on the brink of entering the top 100 for the first time.
