Four Cambusnethan Miners’ Welfare ABC boxers took two gold and two silver medals from the Western District Championships recently.
Marcus Gill – a pro-youth goalkeeper at Celtic – took gold in the 75kg junior category, defeating a boxer from KO Kings in Glasgow in a first-round stoppage during the competition at M&D’s.
Reece Muir also took gold, adding to the Scottish title he won in September, with a good win against a strong opponent from Rob Roy Boxing Club in Glasgow.
Jack Dunbar took silver in his final, against a good boxer from Keir Hardie, while Aaron ‘Benny’ Bennett also lost out in a close-contested bout against Taylor McMahon from O’Neill’s ABC in Cambuslang.
Coach Gerry Taggart said: “Marcus took the Western District title home after winning his bout with a lovely first-round stoppage.
“It was a very composed performance from the big guy.
“Reece also took gold, and it has been a very successful season so far for him, winning both District and National titles.
“‘Benny’ lost out in a closely-contested bout against a good boxer from O’Neill’s, which could have gone either way. But it’s great to see the wee man back in the ring, doing what he loves, and it’s always an exciting fight when he is involved.
“Jack came into the mix as the fight progressed, and fell slightly short, but it was great experience for him, and he is showing fantastic potential.
“There were good displays all around and more great experience for the boxers.”
