Gartcairn realistically can’t pip Cambuslang Rangers to the West of Scotland League Conference B title – but they’re desperate to wreck their title party on Saturday.
Assistant boss Scott Mills says Gartcairn are heading to Somervell Park on Saturday looking to show they’re a good team by beating a “super consistent” side and knocking their title celebrations on to the following week.
Rangers’ 2-2 draw at Renfrew on Saturday put them six clear of Gartcairn, who only have two more games left – and Camby have a massive goal-difference too.
Mills says they don’t exactly have a point to prove, but has been left to rue Cambuslang’s relentlessness.
He said: “The first thing we want to do this weekend is go and win a game of football.
“Cambuslang only need a point now to confirm their title, so we want to stop them from getting that, purely from the simple fact that we want to win our games.
“That will be our focus on Saturday, to go and win, prove we’re a really good team, and make them wait another week, potentially.
“I don’t think we have a point to prove. We beat them in the home game, we know we’re a good team.
“The difference is that we’ve dropped points against everybody else, while they’ve been super-consistent, so fair play to them.”
After seeing that Renfrew almost handed his side an unexpected life-line, Mills added: “It would have been nice if Renfrew had held on for the win.
“It would have been a good game and a good atmosphere to be involved in, knowing you still had a chance. But if you look at the goal-difference they’re about 30 ahead of us.”
Mills admits Gartcairn have mixed feelings about this season but he and boss Willie Kinniburgh are reasonably pleased they have done enough to go into the First Division when the new set-up is confirmed.
He said: “First things first, we’ll finish the season and then look back on games and times when things might have been different.
“When the season’s done we will then be able to look back at ifs, buts and maybes.”
