Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell has hailed striker Scott Williamson after his 40th goal of the season.
The striker - who is a product of the club’s youth academy system - netted a hat-trick alongside a Garry Giffin goal as Camby beat Conference C leaders Drumchapel United 4-0 in the Kilmarnock Pie West of Scotland Football League Cup.
Williamson has reached the feat in just 26 matches and has racked up 12 assists as Campbell’s men lead the way in Conference B, with a spot in the Premier Division next term likely on their current trajectory.
Campbell said of the Fernhill forward: “We had the added bonus of Scott Williamson netting a hat-trick. He’s been really buzzing again these last few weeks. He’s played really well.
“You don’t want to single any players out but we did have some really good individual performances.
“It’s an amazing tally to reach 40 goals. We didn’t set any targets for him at the start of the season.
“We just told him to go and play as we know he can score goals. He is lightning quick and he could have had a couple more. Overall we were very pleased with things.”
Campbell was thrilled with the manner in which his side swept past Drumchapel on Saturday. His side had just came off the back of a 5-1 defeat in the South Challenge Cup to Premier Division outfit Darvel.
Camby’s co-boss watched on as Darvel went toe-to-toe with Championship high-flyers Arbroath in the Scottish Cup on Saturday, showing the level of opposition his side were up against.
But he insists that his side had to get back to basics against Drumchapel – and they did. Cambuslang Rangers return to league action in Conference B this Saturday at home to Port Glasgow.
Campbell added: “We had a chat with the guys prior to the game about our focus. We had to get the tempo of the game correct and show Drumchapel the respect they deserve.
“They’ve done a great job coming into the system and they are pushing hard for a league title. We knew it was going to be a real tough day.
“Collectively we were very pleased with the performance I thought we kept the tempo of the game well. The park was a bit bobbly which made it a bit more difficult in midfield.
“All in all, we were very pleased with the performance.
“We were looking for a reaction to last week against Darvel in the cup.
“The guys stepped up on Saturday and everyone showed up. They really delivered.”
