Cambuslang Rangers co-boss concedes his his side can't compete with giants Darvel

Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell says Saturday’s 3-1 West of Scotland League Premier Division defeat flattered Darvel, but they just can’t compete with the title-chasing giants.

Darvel’s goals came from a hat-trick by former Motherwell striker Craig Moore, while subs included ex-Dundee and Alloa midfielder Daryll Meggatt and Ross Caldwell, formerly of Hibs and St Mirren.

Campbell says Cambuslang – who had opened the scoring early on through Sam Greenwood – went into the game looking to compete as well as they could, but the defeat put them bottom of the table on goal-difference.

He said: “It was a massive challenge, but we played well in the first half, were competing well, and managed to come in ahead.

“There were chances for both sides, we could have got another goal, they could have got a couple, so it was quite even.

“But they equalised with a decent goal, got the penalty, and we struggled a wee bit after that.

“I was pretty disappointed, because for 60-odd minutes we played well, competed, and showed we weren’t there to be beaten.

“I said to the boys that I was disappointed for them, because I didn’t think they deserved to come in 3-1 down.

“We were beaten by a better team on the day, but it was a tough one on Saturday.

“We wanted to make sure we showed up, and I think we did. The boys worked really hard.

“It’s always a massive challenge and we went down there to compete, to make sure we didn’t capitulate at any point, and I don’t think we did.

“There was nobody in the team who had a bad game. They do exactly what you ask of them, work extremely hard and do the best they can, and that’s all we can do against a team like that.”

Camby now face a double-header at home and away to a Glenafton Athletic side that are four places and seven points above them in the table.

Campbell said: “It’s another couple of tough games coming.

“We’re bottom of the league on goal-difference and that’s tough to take as well, but the guys aren’t giving anything up cheaply, they just keep working away and working hard.”
