As it turns out, a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Most Valuable Player may indeed know ball.
Carolina Panthers great Cam Newton just might be right about his polarizing evaluations on a handful of 2023’s standout passers. Among the players he recently categorized as “game managers” was San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who had a nightmarish first half against the Baltimore Ravens.
Purdy tossed three interceptions before the break—and Newton, who may have been watching, had this to tweet:

Here’s what Newton said about Purdy, Dallas’ Dak Prescott, Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa and Detroit’s Jared Goff in an episode of his YouTube show 4th & 1 with Cam Newton:
What are your thoughts on Cam Newton’s take of #49ers Brock Purdy being a game-manager? 🤔

It seems as though Newton was also right about a fellow MVP Lamar Jackson. He’s certainly breaking the ongoing Monday nighter—as he’s passed for 183 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another 36 yards on three attempts.
With just under 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Jackson’s Ravens lead Purdy’s 49ers 30-12.
