The last time Cam Newton played professional football, it wasn’t exactly the best we’ve seen from him.
In 2021, the former Heisman Trophy winner appeared in eight games for the Carolina Panthers, leading them to an 0-5 record. He completed just 54.8% of his attempts for 684 yards with four touchdowns, five interceptions and a career-low 64.4 passer rating.
That came after his unimpressive sole season for the New England Patriots in 2020.
However, Newton doesn’t believe he’s done playing football. In fact, he’s not convinced that there are 32 quarterbacks better than him at this moment. In a recent YouTube video, Newton shared that he could be a backup quarterback in the right situation.
He listed 10 quarterbacks that he’d back up, and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was the fourth player he listed. Tagovailoa was behind Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson and Justin Fields. He was ahead of Malik Willis, C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, Anthony Richardson, Jalen Hurts, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen and Sam Howell.
At this point, the Dolphins have the recently signed Mike White as their backup and second-year quarterback Skylar Thompson as the third string.
However, after 2022, a year where Thompson and then-backup Teddy Bridgewater dealt with their own injuries, it’s not wise to completely shut the door on a veteran option.
