Jurgen Klopp’s new tactical may allow Scotland international Calvin Ramsay to partner Andrew Robertson as Liverpool’s new full-back pairing.
The Anfield side are enjoying a resurgence with eight games unbeaten in their last ten league fixtures and six wins on the spin setting them up for a late charge for a Champions League spot. At the heart of this turn in form has been the new freedom given to Trent Alexander-Arnold to pivot into the centre of the pitch and play as more of a playmaking midfielder despite still lining up as a full-back.
Many have often thought that the England player would suit a midfield role given his defensive frailties at times but that Klopp would need to find a suitable defensive replacement to allow Alexander-Arnold to occupy a role in the middle of the park on a full-time basis. Former Aberdeen youngster Ramsay may just be that player.
Despite making a £6.5m move from Pittodrie to Anfield last summer the right-back has been exceptionally unlucky with injuries and has currently been sidelined for the rest of the campaign since February.
However, next season may be his time to shine if Klopp decides to shift Alexander-Arnold to a permanent midfield position.
Speaking on Sky Sports News, the former Liverpool player Stephen Warnockeckons that promoting Ramsay to a senior role once fit will solve the Alexander-Arnold conundrum.
He said: "It's an interesting hybrid system, but it often leaves Konate exposed in that right full-back role. So it's whether Jurgen Klopp wants to continue that, or whether he wants to move Trent Alexander-Arnold into midfield permanently and sign a new right-back.
"Or potentially promote Calvin Ramsay once he's fit next season."
A marauding full-back in his time at Aberdeen, Ramsay's deliveries clearly caught the eye of Liverpool with a potential eye on moulding into another Trent going forward.
With Andy Robertson on one flank and Ramsay on the other, Scotland's full-back producing prowess would once again be applauded for sure.
