Calvin Ramsay in roaring Liverpool arrival as former Aberdeen star forges exciting Ben Doak double act

Returning Calvin Ramsay made the most of a 28-minute cameo for Liverpool's U21s as he scored and almost sparked an improbable EFL Trophy comeback.

But while Accrington Stanley held on for a 3-2 win there was plenty for both Reds and Scottish football fans to get giddy about. Ramsay's over his injury problems and he netted with his left peg after great work by academy standout Ben Doak. It was then the turn of the former Celtic star to find the net and leave Accrington sweating as their 3-0 lead heading into stoppage time was wiped out by the standout Scots.

Ramsay appears a perfect fit for Liverpool as U21 boss Barry Lewtas encouraged the 19-year-old former Aberdeen star to bomb on down the wing and that's how he found himself in the box to fire home. There was loads to like about the £6.5m man as he forged an instant connection with Doak. The Liverpool first team has enjoyed a thrilling link-up down the right with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah - now the two stars from north of the border are aiming to forge a similar connection.

Ramsay and Doak are likely set for more minutes against Everton's U21 before the former steps up his pursuit of game time for the first team. The former Dons man has earned praise from Virgil van Dijk ahead of his imminent arrival to the first team.

Meanwhile, Doak's incredible debut campaign on Merseyside shows no signs of slowing down as he made it 13 goal contributions (seven goals and six assists) in 11 games at youth level this season.
