Calvin Bassey slammed as Rangers star accused of being out of puff by Nigeria icon

Nigerian legend Daniel Amokachi has criticised Rangers defender Calvin Bassey for a lack of fitness after their World Cup shame.

The Super Eagles were bundled out of Qatar 2022 in a shock away goals elimination to Ghana this week, with three Ibrox stars involved, Bassey, Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun.

But former Everton star and three-times African Footballer of the Year, Amokachi, was far from impressed with Bassey, who was winning just his second cap for Nigeria and was eventually subbed with two minutes to go for former Rangers flop Umar Sadiq.

He said: "Calvin Bassey was exhausted after the first half and you could see that he always had his hand on his waist each time.

"I don’t know why he stayed on for that long.

"The Super Eagles didn’t play at all. The players did not show how important it was for them to play at the World Cup. They were playing as if they didn’t know that there was an away goal rule.

"The urgency was zero from our players.

"They didn’t deserve to qualify for the World Cup from the way they played.

The Ghanaians showed they wanted it more than our boys. Their attitude was not the best at all and they were nonchalant in their play.

"And this is what you get when you have 99 per cent of your players born overseas."
