Calvin Bassey Rangers future addressed as Ibrox hero admits inevitable transfer interest in defender with 'very big future'

Calvin Bassey can go on to have a very successful career - but former Rangers defender Marvin Andrews knew it was only a matter of time before transfer interest ramped up.

Intrigue was raised on Monday as a social media post from the left-sided star's Instagram account appeared at Premier League club Wolves' training ground.

This was quickly cleared up when he appeared for Nigeria in a thumping 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe but interest in still strong in the 22-year-old after his impressive 2021/22 season.

Former manager Steven Gerrard wants him at Aston Villa and Rangers' asking price has been quoted as high as £30million.

An energetic defender himself during his playing days - two of which were spent in Glasgow between 2004 and 2006 - Andrews has been impressed by Connor Goldson in the Light Blues defence.

But after an epic showing against Eintracht Frankfurt in May's Europa League final, the current club ambassador reckons Bassey will accumulate suitors.

Speaking at Cambuslang Rangers' Billy Drummond Memorial match, he exclusively told Glasgow Live Sport: "It is very important, the defence. Big Goldson has been tremendous. Calvin Bassey is strong, athletic. He's only 22 as well.

"If he can avoid any serious injuries then he can go on to have a very big future ahead of him. There's a bit of interest but you were going to get that. They reached a European final and made their mark."

Andrews knows how big an achievement it was for Rangers to reach a major European final just 10 years after administration plunged them into Scotland's fourth tier, despite a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss.

Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst took over from Gerrard last November but couldn't retain the Premiership title they claimed in 2021. But with his own team, the Dutchman can improve the current squad.

Andrews explained: "Everybody knows about Rangers Football Club. For all the bad things the club have been through in the last 10 years, to be in a European cup final in 2022 is amazing for the club.

"They have been good, very good, but they have been very unlucky. They reached the cup final and any team can lose on penalties.

"It's like a flip of a coin. I don't think any player should have any regrets about that match.

"I think they can move forward. Everything Gio did last season was with Steven Gerrard's team. But he's took his team and achieved great things. Hopefully they can build and become better and stronger.

"It was difficult for Gio to come through mid-season and really put his stamp on it. But after a couple of weeks, he transformed the team into how he wants them to play."
