Callum Wilson reveals message to Newcastle team-mates at halftime during ‘bizarre’ Tottenham win

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has revealed what he told his team-mates as they entered the tunnel at halftime 5-0 up over Tottenham at the weekend.

The 31-year-old, who came on in the second half and scored after just over a minute on the pitch, was a big part of the memorable afternoon and opened up on his experiences earlier this week.

"What is going on mate?! Your boys are on fire! Your boys, not you, but your boys are on fire mate! Five goals, 20 minutes in, bloody hell," Antonio exclaimed on BBC Sport's Footballer's Football Podcast.

"Honestly, what a game we had over the weekend," Wilson replied. "And I say we, because we are a team! I think you knew how much of a big game it was, it's obviously really a six-pointer because that was the gap that would've been created between us in the league.

"And yeah, you score so early and you're thinking, 'this is a great start to the game'. But then you get two, then three, four and then five in 20 minutes.

"I was sitting there on the side thinking, 'Get me on!' He's [Alexander Isak] got two already, start subbing people! It's time for me to get on, at half-time I was warming up like a madman.

"The atmosphere was then unreal and everyone was buzzing away and cheering. But in between the goals, it was a eerie, weird atmosphere. Like the crowd was shocked. Like it wasn't really happening.

"I come on, 65 seconds later, Wilson has joined the party! But the game was over, to make it six, it's obviously a fantastic scoreline."

Wilson also spoke about how he couldn't feel sorry for Spurs, because if it was the other way around, they'd also be 'going for the kill'.

"If you're the home team, you've got to be ruthless," he said. "It's football at the end of the day, and you can't afford to go lightly on anybody just because it's not going their way.

"It's go for the kill and that's what the boys did. It's bizarre when you see those scorelines with those players on the field, some unbelievable talent.

"We went down the tunnel with the lads at half-time and my message to them was: 'Lads, don't take your foot off the gas and get complacent. Go for more. Go get your hat-tricks. Lets get [Nick] Popey a clean sheet as well.' Did I feel sorry for them? Mate, I stepped on the field and made it six, I think that speaks for itself!"
