Callum Wilson and Eddie Howe feel referee Jarred Gillett and VAR made the right call in allowing Newcastle United's opening goal against Tottenham on Sunday evening. Hugo Lloris and his Spurs team-mates wanted the first-half strike disallowed after a collision with Wilson outside the box.
The officials saw it as nothing more than a fair coming together, allowing Wilson the chance to pick himself up off the turf before calmly lobbing the French goalkeeper with his weak foot. Lloris' complaints continued long after the VAR check had concluded but Newcastle 's No 9 believes the decision was a fair one.
"I had every right to go for the ball, he’s steaming out, sometimes goalkeepers get too much love from the referee," Wilson told Sky Sports. "He’s [Lloris] chested it and dived into me really. I’ve carried on, put it in, nice goal.

"I just play the game, VAR gets in the way of things. You celebrate, it gets checked and there’s that uncertainty and you’re re-celebrating again. It takes that element away, nevertheless, it’s about the team and three points."
Howe was also quizzed on the incident and admitted he hadn't seen a replay after the game. However, he was in agreement with his forward that the correct decision had been made.
"I haven’t seen it again so I’ll have to go off my initial reaction, I thought the players just come together, I don’t know whether there was one more forceful than the other," Howe said moments later. "It’s a collision so why should that go in favour of the defending team?"
Wilson's goal was soon followed by Miguel Almiron finding the net before half-time. Harry Kane managed to pull one back for the London side in the second period but the Magpies held out to take their place in the top four of the Premier League.
