Callum McGregor on Celtic No2 John Kennedy exit talk as skipper delivers 'selfishly' response

Callum McGregor 'selfishly' hopes John Kennedy stays at Celtic for years to come.

The Hoops No2 has been linked as a possible candidate for the vacant role at Hearts should interim boss Steven Naismith not land the job full-time. He's been in charge since the sacking of Robbie Neilson but after missing out on third spot to Aberdeen, he faces a huge Edinburgh derby clash with Hibs in order to secure fourth position.

The midweek draw at Rangers coupled up with Lee Johnson's side beating the Hoops means just two points separate the duo going into the final game of the season. A decision will then be made by the Tynecastle board.

Celtic skipper McGregor fully understands why the Parkhead No2 will have clubs watching him admitting that a lot of the work he does as Ange Postecoglou's right-hand man goes under the radar and people don't realise his value to the Scottish champions.

McGregor said: “Can I understand why clubs would look at him? Absolutely. John has been a massive part of our success for many years.

"He has been a huge part of things under the gaffer and I am not surprised teams are looking to take him. But, selfishly, we want to keep him for as long as we can.

“A lot of the work John does goes under the radar but the people at the club understand his value as an assistant manager. I am sure he will go on to be a top manager too as he’s been outstanding, but I hope we can keep him for as long as possible.”
