Callum McGregor has backed Ange Postecoglou to follow in the footsteps of Martin O'Neill and lead Celtic all the way to a European final.
Sunday marks the 20th anniversary of the Hoops’ brush with UEFA Cup glory and modern day skipper McGregor sees no reason why his team should not be dreaming of a similar run next year. Well the Rangers supporters on the Hotline came up with a couple as they reacted to the Parkhead captain’s comments.
Dave Shepard, Clydebank, said: “What a laugh I had reading McGregor’s comments about Celtic reaching another Euro final! Given they haven’t won a knock-out tie post Christmas since the year after Seville, I wouldn’t be holding my breath if I were him!” John Campbell added: “Rangers were terrible last year but Celtic hardly dazzled themselves. Two draws against a Shakhtar Donetsk side forced to play on neutral territory doesn’t suggest they’re about to become major players on the continent. Rangers showed year-on-year progression before making it to Seville. Maybe Celtic should just focus on not finishing bottom of their Champions League group this time.”
Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, added: “So Celtic captain Callum McGregor thinks that Ange Postocoglou can lead Celtic to a European Final. I haven't even heard their song yet and where is Eurovision next year?”
Celtic still have business this season to take care of before they can focus on Europe and Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: “What an achievement it will be for Celtic to break the world record with eight domestic Trebles if they can win the Scottish Cup Final. When you think that we are the only club in world football to have won a European cup Quadruple and the world’s only invincible Treble, it is a phenomenal record that puts Scotland on the world football map.”
As chatter surrounding Ryan Kent’s rumoured move to Fenerbache continues, James Kennedy, Kilsyth, called to respond to one of yesterday’s callers: “Andrew Adams said that Ryan Kent is obviously going where the money is. He is certainly leaving where the money isn’t. Rangers are scrimmaging around the desperate end of the transfer market because they don’t have the funds to spend on half decent players. We have never heard how much they paid for Nico Raskin and Todd Cantwell, if anything. They cannot take the £5million risk on Malik Tillman because they do not have the guarantee of Champions League money so that will make their qualification for the group stage much harder. The future doesn’t look as bright as some of their fans think.”
Meanwhile, Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, called to discuss the manager’s vacancy at Dens Park, saying: “Former St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson was right to knock back Dundee. What's the point just going to get relegated as the board have no money to spend to attract top players, that's why they are called the yo-yo club. And it’s why both Dundee clubs should amalgamate and rename themselves Dundee City, it's a no brainer."
Dougie Lawrence, Dowanhill, emailed in to take aim at plans for the new Conference League, saying: “This proposal is not wanted by the Highland League as it will destroy one of the best leagues in the country. The new set up is, as we've been told, to help raise the standard of the national team. But how long have the academies run by the Old Firm been going? And yet they want colt teams to play in this farce. How many Scottish players were on the field at the recent Old Firm game? The SFA should put a limit on the number of foreign players and then the national team might get the benefit. Will they? I doubt it!”
