The family of a schoolgirl, killed after being knocked down by an unmarked police car, has called for a review into the case.
Kelly Edgar, 11, from Everton, was hit by the Ford Fiesta at the junction of Shaw Street and College Street North at 8.20pm on January 30, 1993, as she walked to her local corner shop to buy some sweets with her 13-year-old sister Leanne.
The car was being driven by on-duty PC Michael Cloherty, 28, who was taking the vehicle to the Merseyside Police garage on Smithdown Lane from his base at St Anne Street. He was charged with reckless driving and appeared before magistrates in November 1993, where the court heard he had been driving at a speed between 30 and 40mph at the time of the tragedy.

The magistrate took just 15 minutes to clear the police officer of all charges.
Merseyside Police has now agreed to look into the case again following a complaint from Leanne, now 42.
They said: “We can confirm that a complaint has been received in relation to this matter, which will be assessed by our Professional Standards Department (PSD). Our thoughts and condolences remain with Kelly Edgar's family. While this process is ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
Leanne, a civil servant, told The ECHO her sister's death and the lack of closure "destroyed" her parents, Joey and Patsy, both now deceased.
When Cloherty was cleared in November 1993, Joey said: "If this is an example of British justice, they can keep it."
Leanne said: "I have asked for the case to be reviewed. I want them to look into it properly and see if they can find anything. We feel it was brushed under the carpet.
"It will never bring her back. At the end of the day, she should be here with us. But my mum and dad might rest in peace."
