Caller ID spotted on manager's phone points to Manchester United approach for Leeds United target

The phone of Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has reportedly been spotted with two missed calls from a caller ID of Manchester United. That is according to the Daily Mirror, who claim that Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen found it in a hotel toilet in Doha, Qatar.

Driessen is said to have pressed the power button in order to find whose phone it was, before being greeted with a lock screen photo of van Gaal and his wife, along with a couple of missed calls from the Red Devils. This comes amid reports Man United are set to re-launch a move for Netherlands star Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo revealed earlier this week that both Man United and Leeds United made moves for him during the summer in a deal that would've been worth £40 million. However, due to his excellent start to the season at PSV, and his superb World Cup campaign that saw him score in all three group games, it is likely he will command a much higher fee in January.

He said: “I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds United did come. Should I go there? Now I wait everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.”

Gakpo's form is also likely to rule Leeds out of the running in the upcoming transfer window as other top clubs begin to circle. Premier League leaders Arsenal have been linked too.
