If it weren't clear already, we're fully in video game movie mania now, as a Battlefield adaptation is on the way.
Long-time Mission: Impossible helmer Christopher McQuarrie is set to write and direct, with Sinners star Michael B. Jordan on board as producer, per The Hollywood Reporter. It is also said that Jordan, who most recently won the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in Ryan Coogler's vampire horror, may also star in the Battlefield adaptation.
The project has yet to find a home, but THR reports that Jordan and McQuarrie are meeting with big Hollywood studios and streamers this week, including Apple and Sony. This could well be the biggest bidding war of the year.
Created by Battlefield Studios and published by DICE and Electronic Arts, Battlefield is a military first-person shooter video game focusing on large-scale, online multiplayer battles between conflicting military forces. Players must work as a team to take out other squads, but each player gathers their own stats to receive rank promotions and unlock weapons based on their performance.
The franchise kicked off in 2002 with the World War II-set game Battlefield 1942, which has sold over 3 million copies over the years. Since then, 12 more mainline games and many more spin-offs have been released, each taking place in a different era, some even in the future. The most recent installment, Battlefield 6, had a record-breaking launch in October 2025, pulling in 7 million players in its first 3 days.
Battlefield is often compared to fellow long-running military first-person shooter game Call of Duty, which is ironic, as that franchise also has a movie adaptation in the works. The Call of Duty movie is currently in development at Paramount, with Peter Berg set to direct and Taylor Sheridan co-writing the script. It is unclear whether Paramount have their eye on the Battlefield project too.
The Battlefield movie does not yet have a release date, whereas the Call of Duty movie will hit screens on June 30, 2028. For more, check out our list of the best Battlefield games, and keep up with other upcoming video game movies heading your way.
